Breakfast in a Jar

These began in my kitchen one day when I realized my mornings were too crazy. I decided to plan ahead and made up several jars of pre-measured ingredients for our morning oatmeal. Then in the morning I just bring my water to a boil and pour in the rest! It makes breakfast so easy I can do it with a baby in my arms, and one hanging hungrily on each leg too!
Weeks later I discovered that if I made pretty layers in my jars, they make a great gift for a new mommy or someone not feeling well. I used to just take dinner to families in need. Now I can add breakfast! In the Jar

  • 3 cups Regular Rolled Oats
  • ¾ cup Brown Sugar
  • 1 cup Dehydrated Fruit, any variety*
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
When you are ready to Prepare
  • 6 cups boiling water
Place 1 cup oats in a two quart jar, pack down oats, add 1/3 cup dried fruit and then add 1/4 cup sugar. Pack down to make distinct looking layers. Repeat three times. Top with cinnamon. Secure lid tightly until ready to prepare.
To Prepare:  Bring water to a boil. Stir in contents of jar. Cook and stir up to 5 minutes, or until it reaches desired consistency. Spoon into bowls and serve!Note: I have tried many varieties of layering. If I am making them just for my family I keep it basic with just a layer of oats then sugar then fruit and cinnamon, But for a gift the extra layers are nice.

*Any dried or freeze dried fruit can work. You may need to adjust your water quantity a little if you use freeze dried.
I like to make at least a weeks worth of these at a time. They are not meant to be store in the jars for long periods of time, but if your family loves a bowl of hot oatmeal in the morning, a few of these won’t be on your shelves for long!
