Apple Pielets

These little babies are perfect for small hands. My kids will gobble them up any time of the year and with dehydrated apples they can be available year round.

Pastry

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup cold water

Filling

  • 2 cups Dehydrated Apple Slices, Chopped, covered in water to hydrate completely then drained very well.
  • ¾ cup Sugar
  • 3 Tablespoons Flour
  • 1 dash Nutmeg
  • 1 dash Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon

Topping

  • 2 Tablespoons Sugar
  • ⅛ teaspoon Cinnamon
MIx all ingredients for filling in a large bowl and set aside.

In a separate bowl mix flour and salt. Cut in shortening. Slowly add cold
water and mix until well blended. Roll out one 3rd of the dough at a time on a
floured counter very thin.

Cut rolled dough into 4 inch circles using a large cup or round cookie cutter. Place one tablespoon of apple filling in the center of the circle. Fold pastry in half over the filling and pinch edges together to seal. Place on a cookie sheet and cut one slit on the top of the filling to vent.

Mix sugar and cinnamon together to make topping. Sprinkle topping over all the pielets. Bake at 350℉ for 30 minutes. Makes 24 pielets.  Serve warm.

NOTE:  I prefer the taste of butter flavored shortening in this recipe, but any variety will do.
