If you’d like a glimpse of how wheat berries went over for breakfast at my house, read on!
This week was my first attempt at making wheat berries, and in an effort to keep this real, I’m going to tell you the honest truth about the morning I served them for breakfast. It went something like this…
Spicy Girl enters the kitchen. “What’s that? Is it a new kind of bean?”
(See…they know what I’m all about right now!)
“No,” I tell her. “This is breakfast. It’s wheat. You’re going to love it.”
“Hmmm….”
Picky Boy comes in demanding eggs. “Do I have to EAT that?!,” he asks me.
“Yes,” I reply, and unless you take 1 bite, there will be no more food EVER!!!!
He laughs, but looks pained at the thought. He detests new foods. I actually had to force feed him his first bite of doughnut! I’m happy to report he opened willingly (with eyes squished shut) for his first bite of wheat berries.
Overall, breakfast revealed a 50/50 split. I thought it was good…although a little was really filling. One child liked it even more than I did, announcing she’d eat it every morning. Picky Boy and Little Sister, refused to eat more than a bite. The others ate what was in the bowl, but politely declined seconds.
Spicy Girl has since explained to everyone who will listen that wheat berries explode in your mouth, providing quite a taste sensation. But she didn’t like that the brown sugar slipped off the berries and sank to the bottom of the bowl.
Sneaky as I am, I slipped a little into the granola, and no one complained! We’ll try soup next…

Omygosh, Mellyn! That’s so great! Because…the last couple of months we’ve been eliminating processed foods and introducing more whole foods. Your experience sounds scarily similar to how it went down at our house when we tried kasha for the first time! I’m so glad to know it’s not just my kids!
You are definitely NOT alone! Kids are so great because they tell it just how it is — whether we want to hear it or not! I’d love to hear what things you’ve been trying. I’ve got to look up kasha now…
